Fireworks in Sydney.

If there is one thing Sydney does well, it’s put on a fireworks display. This weekend is the centenary of 100 years of the Australian navy and there has been a special international fleet review with Prince Harry doing the honours. They showed the fireworks on tv last night, and it was terrific.

Of course Sydney has the advantage of a huge sheltered harbour that goes inland for miles, giving extensive safe waterways to put the barges loaded with fireworks. So you can be anywhere along the harbour and still see a fabulous show. The Sydney harbour bridge is also a feature of these shows, although last night it didn’t seem to feature as much as usual.

I’ve always loved fireworks, and as a special treat, our youngest daughter shouted us a trip from New Zealand to Sydney for the beginning of the new century, midnight December 1999 to watch the New Year’s fireworks display.  We also had the advantage of having accommodation right beside the waterfront, so went to the top of this 10 floor building to watch the whole thing. Spectacular. One of those memories that will last a lifetime.
